How to build a website with no money

Do you need a website?

Yes you need a website! But you don't have to pay a lot of money to get one!  The first website we got for our business cost us £1000 + VAT. It looked lovely but it did nothing!

In two years of having it we gained no business and closed no deals because of it.

The second website we got built for us cost £1500 + VAT, which was a lot of money for us to spend.  Again the website did nothing, we had a content management system but it was difficult to use, we could not update it, we couldn't blog from it very well and it did nothing for us.

So far we have spent £2500+VAT and a lot of time on websites that did nothing for us at all!  Not happy people.

We then found a service that we recommend to everyone on our courses to build their websites with.  it is simple drag and drop design, so easy to use and so quick to update.

We built our next website in a couple of hours one night, had a huge amount of fun doing it and actually started to get visitors and business from it!  We recommend www.weebly.com to build your website.

On the right is the description of the Acronym AIDA which is a useful structure for thinking about when you are building your website.  Run through that when you create your next blog posting or web page!

Tomorrow we will be running a workshop called "how to build a website for NO money" using the weebly technology.

Joins us in Reading at the University at 10am for the start!

AIDA

Attention - you have to grab people's attention when they come to the website with a powerful title.  This hooks them into reading more
Interest - once you have their attention you need to hook their interest with your copy.  The purpose of the headline is to get them to read the sub-head, the purpose of the sub-head is to get them to read the first paragraph and so on
Desire - Once they are interested you need to create desire to take action through motivating them with pain and pleasure. If you don't do this it will hurt in some way and if you do this then it will be very pleasurable
Action - Every page should have an action associated with it. What is the highest value thing a customer can do on this page and then make it the biggest most prominent button!
