Reading University Pop-Up Business School Day 2 Learnings

14/6/2013

It has been a crazy week at Reading University and Henley Business School working on building businesses.  I am only now getting to grips with typing up what we have learned this week.  Here are what the     team learned on day 2. Got any questions then send us a tweet!

You can start a business without money – it is possible to get going with very little money and start selling before you have created your product.  Sell your value before you create it.  Take the money up front

People can read how you are feeling – be confident, have fun and work on your belief in your product or service.  People can read your thoughts through your body language so be careful!

Think when you are fresh – the last thing you want to do when you get home after a hard say is to think.  Make sure you think when you are fresh and just have a simple list of things you need to do when you finish!

Be Creative – Any idea is a good idea.  The key to having a good idea is to have lots of ideas!  So let them flow, good, bad or indifferent!  Get the ideas flowing!

Convert your business canvass to a timescale –
and more generally give everything you are doing a timescale.  Work expands to fill time.  If you don’t give yourself a deadline, if you don’t put a timescale on it then it might never happen!

Picture
Eat you frogs first thing in the morning – do the most difficult thing you have to do first thing in the morning because your day can only get better from there

How to make friends – get out there, talk to people, start tweeting, ask questions and be interested.  If you want to be interesting be interested

Incorporate things into your daily routine – success is the build-up of small daily action, turn the things you need to do to build your business into habits using tick sheets.  Build habits that grow your business

People want you to be good –
In all my years of presenting I have never met an audience that says I hope this next presenter is “rubbish”.  It is the same in business, people want you to succeed, they want you to be good

Picture
Trading structures – the difference between a sole trader, ltd company and partnership.  We will do a blog with more detail

Set-up a Twitter account – if you aren’t on twitter you are dead!

Companies house – Use the companies house website to check to see if the company name you want is being used by anyone else

Start a business with no money – Sell your value before you create it, the first job of an entrepreneur is to get out and make a sale.  Nothing happens till the sales happen

Do stuff you want to do – if you work within your passion it doesn’t feel like a job, it is fun.  And given the hours you need to work to make your business fly you have better enjoy doing it!

The most important thing is; TAKE ACTION, get out there & do stuff & have fun.

Reading University Pop-Up Business School Day 1 Learnings

11/6/2013

We asked the 32 students what they learned yesterday in day 1 of the Reading University & Henley Business School Pop-Up Business School and this is what they told us!  Their diagrams are on the right and this is the typed up list with Alan's comments for them and you to use to refer to!

Key Messages from Day 1

  1. Be unrealistic - set a Big Hairy Audacious Goal that will inspire you to keep going even when the going gets tough!
  2. Do what you love - if you are going to work 12 hours a day to build your business then it had better be in something you love otherwise you just won't put in the time or effort!
  3. Content is King! - online content is what gets eyeballs, which is what is going to drive your business, create sales or make things happen for you personally.  Make great content!
  4. Sell your value before you create it - the fastest way to build a business is to sell something to someone.  And sell it before you have build it
  5. Never give up - you will face problems, you will face challenges and issues the key is to keep going, keep working and having fun!
  6. Twitter - use Twitter to make friends, talk about your product, market and connect with people.  If you aren't on Twitter you are DEAD!
  7. How to change your state - if you want to change the way you feel the two quickest ways are: 1. change your physiology, get up move around, sit differently or run! 2. change your focus and the quickest way to change your focus is to change the questions you are asking yourself
  8. Take action - Do something, do anything, create motion and things will happen!  The most successful entrepreneurs have an incredible ability to make things happen!
  9. Business Model Canvass - Use it, play with it, develop it!

Have fun

if there is one overarching message it is to do what you love and have fun doing it.  If you can do that then suddenly it doesn't feel like work, it is something you look forward to doing.

Have fun!

Tomorrow we will be writing up the day two learnings and a few more bits.  Keep tuning into the blog to get the latest tips on how to run a business and make money whilst having fun!

Inspire us with great workshop titles and we will build them and research them for you!

We received a huge amount of applications for the Reading University Pop-Up Business school which is going to be held at the Henley Business School Building on the WhiteKnights campus in Reading and spent all Friday sifting through them.

We found it very difficult to whittle it down to the 30 that we had space for but we have.

Stuart and Alan are so excited to have 30 bright, excited and motivated people to build businesses with.

Their whole aim is to get you set up within a week and preferably making your first sale.  There is nothing like the buzz of making a sale and really starting a new business venture!

10th - 14th June 2013 - Reading University - WhiteKnights Campus

We will be writing a blog posting shortly on how to get the most out of the Pop-Up Business School so keep coming back to check the blog.  You will also find all sorts of business tips on the site that will start you thinking about business, marketing, twitter, sales and more.

If you want to get hold of Alan then tweet him here

Picture
We would like to introduce you to Paula Luke who is a professional marketing consultant with more than 20 years experience and has been running her own marketing consultancy for 5 years called Lepus Marketing.

Why am I telling you all this? Well Paula has very kindly agreed to come into the pop-up business school and help all the businesses there with their marketing.  We are excited to have someone with her experience coming in to work with us!

The one thing that we have discovered running our own businesses and helping many other people set up is that nothing happens till you make a sale.  Nothing happens until you market your product and create sales.  So Paula Luke and Lepus Marketing's help is going to be invaluable!

Running all this for free

The entire two weeks of the Pop-Up business school is free for you to come along to.  All you need to do is fill out the form here and come along to the first session which will be at:

the Motex Centre in Weston Super Mare on the 1st of October at 10 am

So if you are interested in starting your own business, being your own boss or making some extra money then come along and play.
